	Many different types of material are used for different types of applications. There are polyethylene, polypropylene, KDK Thiolon, curly or twisted thatch, and combination materials with all of the for mentioned materials. The backing behind the turf is usually polyurethane with drainage holes but can have a foam backing and other types of backing depending on where the turf will be used or the manufacturer.

If you are looking for the most realistic lawn, the most commonly used turf today is approximately 2 inches in length and has an "in-fill" of round sand, angular sand, specialty sand and rubber. The length of turf you choose depends on the look you want and how you want to use it. Synthetic turf may be installed over almost any surface. Some of the most common surfaces are natural ground, lawn, concrete, asphalt, existing rock "beds" or gardens, even existing worn down "old style" artificial turf areas.
